Supporting Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life

Corporate Social Responsibility, Service Provider News, United Kingdom

Veolia has extended its service to Cancer Research UK by providing the recycling and waste services for over 130 Race for Life and Shine Night Walk events between August and September.

The service will see distribution, collection and processing of around 1000 bins at  Race for Life 5km, 10km, and Pretty Muddy events along with a number of city centre Shine Night Walk events. With an estimated 107,000 people competing the Veolia team will mobilise from 35 depots to meet the needs of these events taking place across the UK. This additional support backs the collection and recycling contract that covers around 600 Cancer Research UK shops across the country.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life and Shine Night Walk events are a series of fun and inspiring events which raise money to help fund research into around 200 types of cancer affecting men, women and children.

Volunteers play a vital part in the success of Race for Life. As well as managing all the waste services, Veolia’s teams are also playing their part in the events, either directly as participants or as part of volunteer support teams. The waste expected from these events will mainly consist of plastic bags, plastic bottles and food packaging and once all of the waste has been collected and the recyclable waste separated, the remaining waste will be converted into green energy, to maintain sustainability.

Keith McGurk, managing director - Commercial, Veolia UK, comments: "Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life and Shine events are really making a difference in helping to fund life-saving research. We are pleased that our teams can help to make the events a success, both through our support services, volunteering and by participating. I hope everyone enjoys the events while raising money for this important  cause."

Emma Hyatt, Head of Events Delivery at Cancer Research UK, adds: "We want to  thank everyone at Veolia for their continued generous support of Race for Life and Shine.

"it makes a huge difference to the success of our events and ensures everyone taking part has a great time whilst raising money to help fund life-saving research."
