Rollout of In-Cab Driver Monitoring Solution
Scottish hard services provider Richard Irvin Facilities Management is implementing Lightfoot, an in-cab visual alerting solution for reducing vehicle emissions and poor driving, across its fleet.
The facility services provider which services 9,000 commercial properties and 56,00 domestic properties has announced plans to install the in-cab training and driver rewards platform in the 225 vans and 90 company cars it operates following an initial trial involving 90 vans that recorded CO2 emission of 8 per cent, fuel consumption gains of 8 per cent, a fall in idling time of 10 per cent, and reduced instances of dangerous driving (as measured by 30 per cent lower incidents of harsh acceleration, braking and cornering).
Lightfoot’s in-cab dashboard device keeps drivers in the 'sweet spot' of their vehicle's capabilities by providing visual and audible nudges. Its developers explain this approach helps users drive smoothly, and is boosted by a reward platform which incentivises better driving. A smartphone app allows drivers can enter draws for prizes after achieving an 'Elite Driver' target level of efficiency which triggers the highest level of savings for fleets. In Richard Irvin FM’s case, Lightfoot has lifted driver engagement to record levels and has set the business on the path to reduce CO2 emissions over the next four years by over 205 metric tonnes.

"We discussed this with Lightfoot who explained that their driver-led solution focusses on helping drivers to be better by giving them the both the tools and the incentive to be safer, more aware and more efficient. Prior to its adoption of Lightfoot, the FM services company relied on core training to ensure the safety of drivers, other road users and pedestrians. However, it soon found drivers regularly fell back into old habits that required an 'always on' in-cab monitoring and alerting solution to address.

Lightfoot was been developed in partnership with the Institute of Advanced Motorists and leading driver-behaviour experts at Bath University. It uses advanced, real-time engine analytics which take account of different factors such as load and road gradient to provide live, in-cab coaching, helping drivers improve both efficiency and safety, and rewarding them for being better.
Through real-time feedback and nudge psychology, drivers intuitively become more aware of their driving style, helping them to be less aggressive, smoother and safer drivers. A verbal end of journey score, based on their driving performance, reinforces good habits and links to the driver app where those achieving and maintaining Lightfoot’s Elite driver status can unlock access to prize draws.
The disruptive technology has been adopted by some of the largest companies in the United Kingdom, including Tesco, Asda, Virgin Media, Dixons Carphone, and South West Water.
