Charting FM’s Development

Author: News Editor

A new book by the co-founder of the United Kingdom's first facilities management company Lionel Prodgers and FM Magazine Editorial Board member and co-author of best-selling textbook "Total Facility Management", Brian Atkins, will consider the emergence of FM as a major global business discipline.

A new book, to be published in late 2017, will set out the history of facilities management, including the complex political, economic and commercial environment that has stimulated the development of the discipline internationally.
Co-authored by long-standing FM expert Lionel Prodgers, who is credited with establishing the first FM company in the UK, and experienced facilities management writer and academic Brian Atkin, it will cover the period from post-World War II to the present day. The book will include the successes and failures of government policies, corporate enterprise in the form of mergers and acquisitions as well as the most influential personalities, institutions, businesses and educators from around the world that have engaged in and helped the significant international growth.
“I have been thinking for some time that we needed a defining record of FM for business management and study,” said Prodgers. “I am thrilled to now be embarking on this project with Brian and look forward to sharing the finished work with the FM and wider business community.”
“Having written major works on facilities management, I am delighted to be working with Lionel to record the history of this key discipline,” added Atkin.

Lionel Prodgers

Lionel Prodgers ‘drifted’ into facilities management during his time as a corporate real estate adviser in the late 70’s and co-founded Facilities & Property Management Plc in 1984, which helped define the discipline in its widest sense – managing HQ facilities for international corporates such as BAT, Bayerische Landesbank, BP, Cable & Wireless, DEC, Unisys and Xerox.
Lionel is credited as a pioneer of facilities management and, according to one leading UK journal, ‘The Father of FM’. Lionel served as Chairman of the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) in the UK from 1997 - 2000, Chairman of the European Facilities Management Network (EuroFM) in the Netherlands from 2000 to 2005 and as a board member of the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA) in the U.S.A. from 2005 to 2008.
He was honoured with PFM’s ‘Peter Middup Lifetime Achievement Award’ in the UK in 2013 and received the BIFM ‘Award for Overall Industry Impact’ in 2011 - in recognition of the significant and positive contribution he has made in the development of facilities management over the years. Lionel is an Honorary Fellow of the BIFM, Fellow of the Institute of Directors and a Fellow of LEAD International.
Presently based in Dubai, Lionel is Managing Director of Agents4RM International and an active management consultant, speaker and contributor on FM related topics.
