Sika Sarnafil Lead-Look Roof Blends in with Historic Architecture

A Sika Sarnafil lead-lookalike roof is helping to ensure that a new building in the heart of Royal Leamington Spa remains sympathetic to its historic surroundings.

With the new Station Road student accommodation surrounded by the town’s famous regency architecture and directly facing its railway station, an aesthetically in-keeping solution was called for.

Registered Sika Sarnafil roofing contractor RLW Roofing, based in Birmingham, rose to the challenge, recommending the brand’s single ply system to achieve a traditional look complete with mansards and batten profile.

As RLW’s Alan Mackenzie explains: “We needed to provide a modern waterproofing solution with a traditional appearance and feel. So the first thing we did was change the cold, liquid-applied fibreglass roofing system originally specified to a Sika Sarnafil single ply membrane. Importantly, this allowed us to include the mansards with batten profiles, giving the traditional lead look that was required.”

RLW installed approximately 1,500sq m of Sika Sarnafil S327-15EL membrane in Lead Grey to the top of the flat roofs, with 1,200sq m of Sika Sarnafil G410-15ELF, also in Lead Grey, fully adhered to the mansards. Both areas were then covered with around 3,500sq m of batten profile at one-metre intervals.

Within the mansard area were 85 timber-moulded dormers, which posed both a technical and practical challenge. “The dormers demanded a very high level of detailing,” Alan continues. “On each, the membrane was fully adhered to the timber on the curved areas to ensure full adhesion and continuity to all details and areas. It was a time consuming test of our team’s product expertise and high standards of workmanship, but the results are spectacular.”

Alan says that the project was successfully completed to the client’s satisfaction, plus was on time and within budget. As he concludes: “The traditional-look roof ensures the completed building fits in perfectly with its surroundings, while providing the client with a modern, high-performance solution with a life expectancy of over 40 years.”
