Celebrating Key Workers on World FM Day

Industry & Regulatory News, Facilities Management, Education, Environmental Management, United Kingdom
Edge Hill University in Lancashire, North West England, is celebrating World FM Day today by thanking staff for their hard work during the year.

In line with the FM Day 2020 theme, 'Celebrating our environment', the university is highlighting its commitment to sustainability and protecting the natural world; in addition to recognising the achievements of its sustainability manager, Pam Brandwood, who is retiring after 11 years at Edge Hill.

Brandwood and the university's sustanability team have worked with the Edge Hill Facilities Management department (the largest department providing support services) to introduce multiple initiatives to make its campus 'greener'.

These achievements have been reflected in the university becoming the first tertiary educational facility to receive a 'Green Kitchen' award from the UK's Carbon Trust, the institution increasing its usage of renewable electricity to 100 per cent of energy consumption, the introduction of a United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) blog with the Faculty of Education, the re-launch of the university's Bike User Group, achieving Fairtrade accreditation in 2011; and working with the Edge Hill University Student Union on recycling initiatives including a 'Student Reuse Scheme' and 'Big Student Clear-out'.

Brandwood says: "In 2009 I came to Edge Hill and although my main focus was energy and water, I became heavily involved in the wider sustainability activities.

"Over the last 10 years I have gained a broader knowledge of the impact of humans on the planet, the life it sustains and the great inequalities among people. The fact that everything that every one of us does has an impact, and it has changed the way I live my life. I brought this philosophy to Edge Hill and have helped to make the University more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

"I’m really proud of what I have achieved."

The Facilities Management department at Edge Hill employs over 320 members of staff across 12 defined service areas. Together they maintain the 160-acre campus keeping it safe, secure, sustainable, maintained, clean and tidy for the thousands of students, staff and visitors who enjoy the campus.

Many FM staff are classed as key workers and are still going into work to carry out essential services such as grounds maintenance, deliveries, security patrols and cleaning.

The Edge Hill University community has expressed it gratitude for everything FM staff do to keep the university running, safe and clean.

Adrian McGillion, Director for Facilities Management, says: "World FM Day provides the opportunity for colleagues to reflect on the excellent work that they do throughout the year maintaining a beautiful campus for the enjoyment of all and creating a safe and vibrant place to study.

"I am very fortunate to lead such a dedicated and committed team of colleagues who are passionate about ensuring that they have a positive impact on our students’ experiences whilst studying at Edge Hill.

"Pam has been a real ambassador and champion for ensuring that the sustainability agenda is at the heart of everything we do. We will be sorry to lose such a valued colleague, and I’m sure that Pam will continue to be a real ambassador and champion for the environment even in her retirement."
