The new app provides for the easy identification of (and concentration of cleaning resources on) “grot spots”.
Global Award for Serco Street Cleaner
Jason Gibbs, who has worked for Serco as a street cleaning supervisor for nine years, developed an app which allows street cleaners to grade the cleanliness of individual streets via their phone each time they arrive to clean them.
The data is then sent to an online programme where it can be analysed, allowing Serco and the Council to identify recurrent “grot spots” and prioritise cleaning schedules so that cleaners can be sent more regularly to the streets that need cleaning most often.
Jason developed the app at home in his spare time, despite having had no formal training or career experience as a software developer.
Hammersmith and Fulham Council were so impressed by Jason’s ingenuity that they have invited him to spend time with their business intelligence team to see if similar ideas can be applied to other Council services.
James Farquhar, Serco Contract Manager for Hammersmith and Fulham, said:
“I was bowled over when Jason first showed me the app and I couldn’t believe how he had just built it at home in his spare time. It is such a brilliant idea and it is really helping us to continually improve our street cleaning service for local residents. Jason brings the same creativity and passion to his role every day, so I am absolutely delighted to see him recognised with this prestigious award.”
Jason was presented with his award by Serco Chief Executive Rupert Soames at an event marking the company’s UK winners of its Global Pulse Awards. The awards celebrate employees from among Serco’s 50,000 strong team around the world who have done extraordinary things for their colleagues, customers or communities.
Serco has provided street cleaning and waste and recycling collection services on behalf of Hammersmith and Fulham Council since 2008. Audit figures published by the Council in April last year confirmed the Borough’s streets were the cleanest they had ever been.
